The main motivic idea of this piece is introduced by the tuba in measure 15. Throughout the piece, this theme is being rotated and transposed, until it ends up entirely backwards in the first trumpet at measure 83. The structure of this piece revolves around the gradual reversing of this main theme, bookended by the fanfare-like material.
